Shlama, Brookings!
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak on the significance of the Aramaic translation of our Lord’s Prayer to the First Chruch of Christ, Scientist, Brookings. The opportunity to share what I had learned in my Aramaic language course in San Diego from the Chaldean people of Northern Iraq had me brimming with excitement. The morning of the talk I was up before dawn.
Rather than stay in bed, I decided to walk north from the center of town. Guided by the stars and full moon, I walked toward Harris Beach. After I had walked a quarter mile north of town on Chetco Avenue, I found a pedestrian trail that paralleled the ocean.
Just north of the first home on the path, a six foot high, square white pole stood on a grassy knoll overlooking the ocean. The pole reminded me of the Peace Pole next to the table I dined at while attending a summer session at seminary. Drawing nearer, and with the moon as my flashlight, I noticed the words, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” written in nine languages on the sides of the pole. It was like meeting an old friend. I was so delighted I could not help but give the Peace Pole a hug!
Afterwards, I sat down on the grass to think about the significance of peace in my life. The first word that came to my thought was “shlama.” Shlama means “peace” in Aramaic, a language spoken during Jesus lifetime. Shlama is similar to the Hebrew word, “shalom,” and the Arabic word, “salaam,” and is also used as a salutation.
The ongoing global situation of the refugees in Northern Iraq and Syria had given me plenty of opportunity to think deeply about the concept of peace, from many differnt angles and languages. One conclusion that I had come to was that to pray effectively for global peace, I had to start with peace in my own life. This is one reason that I had translated the Lord’s Prayer from Aramaic.
In our Lord’s Prayer, Jesus is recorded as saying, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is heaven.” I feel that Jesus gave a blessing of peace to the whole world, and for all time, through these verses. I felt that the message of “May Peace Prevail on Earth” was in some ways a paraphrase of Jesus’ message.
As I pondered these thoughts on the grassy perch, I realized that the correlative verses in the scientific translation of the Lord’s Prayer by the discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, provided addition insight on Jesus’ words. She writes:
“Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present.
Enable us to know, — as in heaven, so on earth — God is omnipotent, supreme.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 16-17).
The idea that came to me at that moment was that in proportion to humanity’s understanding of the peace of God will humanity demonstrate peace on earth.
Soon dawn was breaking, and it was time to head back for breakfast. The jitters over the upcoming presentation had been replaced by a deep-seated sense of peace.
Later that morning that peaceful feeling was reinforced with my opening greetings to the attendees: “Shlama, Brookings!”

I used this time to pray for our Saturdays big community event. This is our 7th Free Community Clean Up.The first one during Corona 19. We had to submit a business safety plan to the county for approval, have signage enforcing all the new health rules from distancing to face masks etc. We had approval but would the residents of our community conform. That was the big question and that would determine if we could do three more clean ups in three other communities. Due to self quarantine many residents did not see our banners and fliers. The forecast was a heat wave for 6 days with temps. hitting 100's. We had a challenge to know that a right idea will work out. I asked God to give me a sign that we were doing the right thing. Saturday morning really early I went out to feed the chickens before the event and two rain drops hit me. It never did rain but it made me look up to see a double rainbow. One rainbow is a promise that all will be well. We had a double one what could go wrong? Well nothing did everything went perfect. People arrived at 105 degrees we all worked together following all safety procedures and had an excellent turn out. Without anybody complaining about heat or orders. With God all things are possible. The attached picture is the double rainbow Sat. mor

Here is a quick write up of some of my inspiration in praying for up coming protests.
In light of recent events I have been thinking a lot about the term group mentality.
I had been looking for a root definition which states: people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis.
In that search I discovered an article by Rebecca Lee and in her article she really breaks it down a very interesting way.
GM: Groupthink occurs when a crowd of people (usually with good intentions) conform in such a way that leads to dysfunctional or irrational behavior. Their viewpoints may be so strong that critical thinking becomes impaired and ration takes a back seat to the intensity of emotion rising from the group. –Rebecca Lee (The Acceptance of Group Mentality)
This of course made me think of Mind, and how the only mind we can be in sink with is Mind. Doing as both Jesus and Mrs. Eddy had done and seeing them as the children of God. However, I was struggling to put the news aside and not be upset by the destruction that I was seeing and hearing about. In times like these I tend to take a leaf out of Jesus’ book and create a parable for myself to help me understand the Truth. I would like to share that with you.
As an Electrician, I would like to explain this as I would an electrical system. Don’t worry, I’ll keep it simple.
If we were to construct a simple security system we know a few things. There will be a Power Supply, Main Computer, and Wires to carry the signal. Let’s call the Power Supply is Life and working in sink with that is Mind the Main Computer. Mind is sending out a signal along the wires. Let’s say the signal is I Love You. The wires take the signal to another source.
Unfortunately you aren’t seeing the result you should be seeing.
So we look deeper, beneath the surface if you will. Here we see a tangled mess of wires. Each wire produces an electromagnetic field that circles the wire when power is applied, normally this isn’t a problem. If they are bunched together like this the fields expand and intersect with each other and the signal becomes lost. We call this Electromagnetic Interference or Crosstalk. The signal is so distorted that it isn’t received. This is our Group Mentality or Groupthink. The vessels are confused and are simply unable to hear Mind or listen.
As you observe the mess it becomes easy to get upset. You feel anger, perhaps you want to blame whoever wired this system, and maybe you are so upset that you’d rather fetch a wire clippers, cut the wires out, and start over.
But there is a better way. Identify the wires. One by one you identify the wires and trace them back to the source. Separating them from interference and seeing their actual purpose. And suddenly the result is what we were hoping for.
Because the facts are: They were never disconnected from the Source, Mind. The signal didn’t change. It was always I Love You. The wires were already perfect.
All we had to do was mentally separate the seemingly looming giant of a group of people out of God’s control and break them down into individuals, individuals who were never separated from God, who cannot be prone to violence, because that is simply not the signal they are receiving.
